Scientists found a gene that could help Alzheimer patients to live with the disease without suffering from its devastating symptoms.
Medicines for patients have been available for years now but haven’t really make a difference in patients’ life. At an early stage, taking medicine can make a bit of difference but after a while drugs don’t do their job anymore and the symptoms of the disease are getting ground. Even when using medicine, Alzheimer’s patients still suffer from the symptoms of the disease making them unable to live on their own after a couple of years.
But the situation could be about to change with this new discovery by the Gladstone Institute, in California. A group of researchers has managed to neutralize for the first time the most important gene related to Alzheimer’s disease.
According to previous studies, Apolipoprotein E4 is the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease development. It has even been observed that people who have a copy of this gene have a double chance of developing the disease.
The researchers used stem cell technology to create new neurons from the cells that had been donated by patients suffering from the disease. Once created, the scientists used a genetic structure corrector to combat it. The result was that they managed to eliminate any trace of the disease.
The researchers themselves have already made direct contact with the pharmaceutical industry to start working on a possible medicine or vaccine containing the so-called “structure corrector” in their composition.
It is estimated that, in a period of about 10 years, people suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease can live with the disease without having to face its devastating symptoms or will be able to cure it completely with the new gene fixing Alzheimer’s Disease treatment.
